Caleb Williams vs Drake Maye, Take Two: Everything You Need for Patriots vs Bears on Thursday Night Football

Two quarterbacks, one draft class, and a whole lot of unfinished business. Tonight at Soldier Field, Caleb Williams and Drake Maye meet for the second time in three years, and this time neither one is a rookie trying to survive. Both are 4-2, both are playing the best football of their young careers, and both know what this game means in a crowded playoff picture. The Bears host the Patriots at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video, and there is a real argument this is the best game of Week 7: two of the league’s most exciting young teams, a Super Bowl XX rematch, and a measuring stick for two quarterbacks who will be linked together for the next decade.

The basics: when, where, and how to watch

  • Matchup: New England Patriots (4-2) at Chicago Bears (4-2)
  • When: Thursday, October 22, 8:15 p.m. ET (7:15 p.m. CT)
  • Where: Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois
  • TV: Prime Video nationally (Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit, Kaylee Hartung); FOX 32 in Chicago, ABC 5 WCVB in New England
  • Odds: Bears favored by about a field goal; total near 50

Both teams sit at 4-2, which is remarkable given where each was a month ago. Chicago lost its quarterback to a hamstring injury and stumbled, then got him back and immediately looked like a different team. New England started slow enough that people were asking uncomfortable questions about Drake Maye, then ripped off three straight wins and reminded everyone they played in last season’s Super Bowl. The Patriots won that trophy in February and opened this season as defending AFC champions, and they are not sneaking up on anyone.

The last time they met was ugly. Ask Caleb about it.

You might not remember the last Williams vs Maye game, but Caleb Williams probably does. In November 2024, both were rookies, both started, and the Patriots walked into Soldier Field and won 19-3. Maye threw for 184 yards with a touchdown and a pick, nothing spectacular, nothing needed. Williams, meanwhile, completed 16 of 30 passes for 120 yards and got sacked nine times. Nine. It was the kind of game that ends up on a quarterback’s permanent record, the one he thinks about when he cannot sleep.

Things have changed. Maye has turned into one of the most efficient passers in football. Williams, when healthy, has been surgical. This is not a rematch of that slog. It is a rematch of the idea, the one where the two best quarterback prospects of the 2024 class finally show the league what it actually drafted. Even the players feel it. Patriots safety Kevin Byard, who spent two years practicing against Williams in Chicago, put it plainly: “Caleb versus Drake, obviously same draft class, two phenomenal quarterbacks. Drake’s been playing phenomenal, Caleb’s been playing phenomenal.”

Why Chicago is favored: the Williams factor and a ground game that punishes

Caleb Williams missed three games with a hamstring injury, and there was real worry about rust on a short week. Then he went to Atlanta and completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown, opening the game with a 14-yard scoring strike to Colston Loveland. He completed his first 12 passes. That is not a guy easing back in. That is a guy making a statement.

The Bears do not ask Williams to do it alone, either. They lead the NFL in rushing, plays per drive, and yards per drive, which is a fancy way of saying they grind you down and stay on the field. D’Andre Swift ran for two touchdowns, and the defense held Bijan Robinson, the league’s leading rusher coming in, to 61 yards on nine carries. Chicago also gets the scheduling edge: New England travels on a short week after a physical division game, while the Bears know the Thursday home routine. Small edges add up, and Chicago has most of them.

Why New England can absolutely steal this one

Here is the thing about Drake Maye right now: over the last three weeks, he has thrown an NFL-best 10 touchdown passes with a 119.3 passer rating and just one interception. His 0.38 EPA per dropback during that stretch is elite. The Patriots did not allow a single sack against the Jets, and Maye’s pressure rate was his lowest since Week 1. When the offensive line holds up, this offense hums. Through three games the Patriots averaged over 33 points, after looking awful through the first three. That is a team that figured something out midstream, and those teams are dangerous.

Maye’s respect for his counterpart is genuine, by the way. “He’s special in the way he can move and kind of escape and evade pressure, and throwing on the run is pretty cool to watch,” Maye said of Williams this week. “He’s got crazy arm talent, and it’s fun to watch.” There is no trash talk here, which somehow makes it better. These two clearly like watching each other play, and tonight they get to do it on the same field.

The Patriots’ path runs through the air and through Chicago’s aggression. The Bears play man coverage at the league’s second-highest rate, a matchup that should benefit A.J. Brown, acquired from the Eagles in June. Brown is questionable with an ankle injury and had a rough outing against the Jets (three catches, 27 yards, three drops on 10 targets), but he is the kind of receiver who erases a bad week in one quarter.

Three matchups that will decide Thursday night

A.J. Brown vs Jaylon Johnson. This is the headliner within the game. Brown is trying to bounce back from his worst outing as a Patriot, and Johnson is one of the league’s best man-coverage corners on a defense that plays man more than almost anyone. If Brown wins, the Patriots’ ceiling goes through the roof. If Johnson locks him down, Maye has to beat Chicago with everyone else.

The Bears’ pass rush vs New England’s patchwork line. Chicago is missing two defensive ends, which is a problem, but Kyler Gordon’s return gives them a blitz weapon they did not have. New England’s line just played its cleanest game of the season against the Jets. Something has to give. On a short week, the team that wins the line of scrimmage usually wins the game.

Bears defense pass rush against Patriots offensive line

Williams’ legs vs Maye’s arm. The numbers say these two are near-even as passers right now, but Williams adds a second dimension with his scrambling, projected to add close to 50 rushing yards. Maye wins through the air and through structure. Whichever quarterback forces the other defense to defend the full field for four quarters probably walks out of Soldier Field at 5-2.

What is actually at stake

The winner hits 5-2 and banks a conference win that matters in January. The loser falls to 4-3 and spends the weekend watching rivals. For Chicago, this is the first of three straight prime-time games before their Week 10 bye, a stretch that will define their season. For New England, a fourth straight win on the road in prime time would be a statement that the defending AFC champions are not going anywhere, and Maye keeps climbing the MVP conversation.

There is a sentimental layer, too. This is a rematch of Super Bowl XX, and it comes just days after the football world said goodbye to Mike Ditka, the coach who led the ’85 Bears to that title. Expect Soldier Field to feel that tonight. Some games are just football. This one feels like it carries a little more.

Soldier Field crowd on Thursday Night Football

The models are split but lean Chicago. ESPN Analytics gives the Bears about a 59 percent chance to win, and the oddsmakers have them laying roughly a field goal with the total near 50, which tells you the market expects points. Both teams can score, both quarterbacks are hot, and both defenses have holes. That is the recipe for a classic.

My pick: Bears 27, Patriots 24. Williams at home, on a short week, with the ground game and the crowd, is the tiebreaker. But if Maye keeps playing like he has for the last three weeks, nobody should be shocked when New England walks out of Chicago with its fourth straight win. This is the one game tonight you do not want to miss. For more US Sports coverage, and a look back at how the Patriots got here with that wild win over the Bills, stick around.
