On October 3, 2025, Taylor Swift released The Life of a Showgirl. Exactly one year later, to the day, that same album is sitting at No. 1 on the album charts in two countries. And it did not come back alone. It brought a brand-new single with it, Patient Zero, which debuted at No. 1 on the singles charts.
The industry has a name for topping both the album and singles charts in the same week: the chart double. Swift has now pulled it off five times, once in every calendar year since 2022. This time, she did it in the UK and Australia simultaneously, and she did it with an album that is twelve months old. That almost never happens. Here is what actually went down this week, and why it keeps happening to her.

What Actually Happened This Week
The spark was The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an expanded edition of the album released on September 25 with four brand-new songs: Patient Zero, Pink Clouding, Babylon, and Cleveland!. The original album was already one of the biggest releases of 2025. The Encore edition gave it a second life, and fans treated the new tracks like a whole new album drop.
When the Official Charts were published on October 2, covering the week of October 2 to October 8, the results were startling. Patient Zero went straight to No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart. The Life of a Showgirl climbed back to No. 1 on the Official Albums Chart. One artist, both crowns, same week.
Australia told the same story. The Life of a Showgirl rocketed from No. 23 to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and Patient Zero debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, according to Billboard’s chart reporting. A chart double on two continents, in the same week, off an album that turned one year old the next day.
The numbers behind the single are worth pausing on. Patient Zero is Swift’s eighth UK No. 1 single. It is also her third UK chart-topper of 2026, after Opalite and I Knew It, I Knew You, the song she recorded for the Toy Story 5 soundtrack. This is the first calendar year in which she has scored three UK No. 1 singles, and she is the only artist to pull off a hat-trick of UK chart toppers in 2026 so far.
Four New Songs, Three of the Week’s Top Five
The Encore edition did not just deliver one hit. It delivered a takeover. In the UK, Cleveland! debuted at No. 3 and Babylon at No. 4, which means Swift held three of the week’s Top 5 singles. In Australia, the Encore tracks were even more dominant: Cleveland! at No. 3, Babylon at No. 4, and Pink Clouding at No. 5. Ella Langley’s Choosin’ Texas slipped from No. 1 to No. 2 to make room.

Even the old songs got pulled along. In Australia, The Fate of Ophelia, the original album’s lead single, bounced from No. 14 back into the Top 10. Across her career, Swift has now logged 69 top 10 hits on the ARIA Singles Chart and more than 70 weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, a run that stretches all the way back to Speak Now in 2010.
There is one more record tucked inside this week. With Patient Zero joining The Fate of Ophelia and Opalite as UK No. 1s, The Life of a Showgirl is now the first Swift album to produce three UK No. 1 singles. For an artist who has been rewriting the record books for a decade, a first like that is still a headline.
The Anniversary Comeback
This is the part that should not be possible. Albums do not normally return to No. 1 on their one-year anniversary. The Official Charts Company notes that The Life of a Showgirl is only the second Swift album to do it, after The Tortured Poets Department.
Remember what the original release did. When The Life of a Showgirl came out in October 2025, it became her 14th UK No. 1 album, the most ever for a female artist in Official Albums Chart history (her first was Red back in 2012). It opened with 423,000 chart units, the biggest opening week for an international album in the UK this century. That same week, she swept the top three spots on the Singles Chart with The Fate of Ophelia at No. 1, Opalite at No. 2, and Elizabeth Taylor at No. 3.
A year later, she basically did it again. Not with a new album, but with four new songs bolted onto the old one. And honestly, that might be the savvier move. A full album cycle takes years to plan. A deluxe edition takes a studio session, a rollout plan, and a fan base that treats every track like an event.
Five Doubles in Five Years
The chart double is supposed to be rare. You need the hottest song and the hottest album in the country at the same time. Most artists never do it once. Swift has now done it five times, with five different album-and-single pairings, in five straight years:
- October 2022: Midnights with Anti-Hero
- November 2023: 1989 (Taylor’s Version) with Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version)
- April 2024: The Tortured Poets Department with Fortnight featuring Post Malone
- October 2025: The Life of a Showgirl with The Fate of Ophelia
- October 2026: The Life of a Showgirl with Patient Zero
Read that list again. She has claimed the Official Chart Double in every calendar year since 2022. It is not a fluke anymore. It is a pattern.

Why This Keeps Happening
There is no mystery here, just execution. The Encore rollout was textbook Swift: announce one single early (Patient Zero was revealed before the rest of the set), premiere a self-directed music video at the 2026 MTV VMAs, where she also collected the inaugural artist director prize, and let fans decode every frame. Reports noted the video was shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, the Oscar-winning cinematographer, which tells you everything about the production level she brings to a four-track deluxe edition.
Then add the machinery: limited physical preorders, timed promotion, and a fan base that treats streaming like a team sport. When Swifties decide a song is going to No. 1, they organize like it is an election. The Official Charts Company had already flagged strong early sales and streaming interest on September 27, days before the final numbers came in.
And zoom out for a second. This is also just what the music business looks like now. The album cycle is dead. Artists extend eras with deluxe editions, bonus tracks, and surprise drops, and nobody does it better. Swift turned a one-year-old album into the biggest story in music this week without recording a full new record. Every label executive in the world is taking notes.

What Comes Next
The charts for the week of October 2 to October 8 are locked in. Whether Patient Zero and The Life of a Showgirl hold their crowns for a second week depends on what drops next. But the bigger question is whether anyone else can break the streak. Swift has owned the chart double every year since 2022. If she does it again in 2027, we will have to stop calling it a milestone and start calling it a tradition.
For now, the scoreboard is simple. Eight UK No. 1 singles. Fourteen UK No. 1 albums. Three No. 1 singles in one calendar year, a first. Five chart doubles in five years. And a one-year-old album sitting on top of the world like it just came out yesterday. Say what you want about the strategy, but the numbers do not lie: nobody in pop music understands the game better than Taylor Swift.
